There is no physical investigation such as a blood test or brain scan for ADHD. Instead, the diagnosis is made by a specialist clinician according to formal criteria. You have to have a certain number of symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity present since childhood. These symptoms must also be causing you impairment in multiple areas of your life, e.g. at work and at home, for a diagnosis to be made.
To get the best understanding of how your ADHD has developed since childhood it is important to get some collateral history аnd іnрut frоm someone that has known you, preferably since childhood, such as your parents, teachers, old friends, or other mеdісаl рrасtіtіоnеrѕ. At The ADHD Centre your assessment will be carried out by one of our team of ADHD Specialist Consultant Psychiatrists. We send out some forms to be filled out beforehand so that the actual assessment is easier and less arduous for you. Assessments normally take between 60-90 minutes. You do not need a GP referral and in fact most of our adult patients are self referrals. We understand that adults with ADHD when they finally come round to having their assessment usually want to be seen quickly, which is why we aim to see new patients within one week. The run new patient assessment clinics during the week and on most weekends.
