Child PTSD Assessment & Trauma Support

If your child has experienced a distressing event and is struggling emotionally, support is available.

Children and young people may experience emotional and psychological difficulties following a distressing or traumatic event. While many children recover over time with support, some may continue to experience ongoing symptoms that affect their daily life.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after events such as accidents, loss, medical experiences, or other situations that feel overwhelming or frightening.

We provide clinically led assessments to support children and young people experiencing trauma-related difficulties, helping families build understanding and identify the most appropriate support, particularly where past experiences are affecting emotional wellbeing and daily functioning.

Understanding PTSD

Common signs of PTSD in children

PTSD can present differently depending on a child’s age and development. You may notice:
Younger children may express distress through play, behaviour changes, or regression.
Without support, these difficulties may persist and affect long-term emotional development.
  • Re-experiencing the event through nightmares, flashbacks, or intrusive thoughts
  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations that remind them of the event
  • Increased anxiety, fear, or hypervigilance
  • Difficulty sleeping or frequent waking
  • Emotional distress, including irritability, anger, or withdrawal
  • Difficulty concentrating or engaging at school
  • Physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches

What is PTSD?

PTSD is a condition that can develop after a child has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It can affect how they think, feel, and respond to situations, even after the event has passed.

Children with PTSD may continue to feel as though they are in danger, or may struggle to process what has happened.
