ADHD Coaching: Deciding What To Wear As A Serious Challenge

Of all the decision-making that an ADHD person goes through, probably the biggest challenge that they have to go through is deciding what to wear. Just like deciding where to eat, there’s just a lot of options for you to choose from. So unless you only have a limited amount of clothing in your closet, this will be one of your biggest problems when getting ready for a particular occasion. Deciding to choose the right clothes to wear in the morning can be difficult, to say the least. Having ADHD makes it extra hard, especially for the following reasons: Here are the ADHD Coaching what to wear:

  • The ADHD brain struggles with decision-making, whether it’s big or small.
  • The ADHD population are usually not morning people. Most of the time, their brains are not active and aware even after they get dressed.
  • You find it hard to put things together, especially when it comes to ‘dressing appropriately.’ You usually aren’t aware of the social rules for the proper dress code on any given occasion. You also aren’t confident and sure if what you’re wearing naturally goes together or not.
  • You aren’t taking good care of your laundry, which results in having limited clothing to wear. You also don’t have the items that match together perfectly and are clean.
  • You can also become sensitive to certain textures, which means some clothes can make you itch.
  • You tend to become meticulous with what you wear as some tend to make you uncomfortable.

Incorporating A Uniform

Remember the time you went to a private school, where you had to wear a uniform every day you’re at school? Life was quite easy back then. It was easy to get up and get dressed in the morning. There was no deep thought or significant decision-making needed to be made. All you have to do is put on your standard uniform, and you’re ready to go. You don’t even have to worry about looking good or fitting in with other people, as they are also wearing the same thing.

Even though you’re no longer wearing a uniform, you can still apply the concept if you’re having a hard time deciding what to wear as a person with ADHD. You can actually formulate your own ‘dressing format’ that you can then follow so you won’t have to worry about what you’re going to wear for the day.  You might not have an official uniform to follow right now, so why not create your very own uniform?

You don’t have to create and design your own personalised uniform. Instead, why don’t you create a schedule for what you should wear for a day for the entire week? Not only will it be convenient for you but it will also take your brain work out from having to get dressed every day. It will also mean you will look good for the most part, which would contribute to your overall confidence and comfortability.

Sample Scenarios

If deciding on what to wear is still difficult, you can choose to create your own personalised uniform if that would ultimately solve your problem. There have been numerous accounts of people deciding to wear the same clothing instead of having to waste their time rummaging their closet and looking for something good to wear. Here are some of these accounts.

  • A local news anchor wore the same suit for an entire year. Surprisingly enough, no one even noticed. People just went on with their daily lives that they fail to notice her already wearing the same suit day in and day out.
  • A female adult ADHD patient named Matilda Kahl made a firm decision to wear the same thing every single day. She has been doing it for three years now and will continue to do so in the following years to come.
  • A man from York has also claimed to have worn the same clothes for two years now. At first, his friends ridiculed him. But when they saw that he was serious with his decision, they completely adapted his newfound habit, and he went on with his life.

Tips To Formulating Your Own Dress Code

While you don’t have to wear the exact same thing, some people just find it slightly more comfortable and more convenient to just have a collection of the same shirts, shorts, and even underwear and wear them consistently. However, you can also create an effective formula for dressing up that works wonders for you. You can then choose to interchange your clothes on that formula.

Here are some tips to help you wear the same kind of clothing while still maintaining a little bit of distinction from all the others:

  • If you love wearing a particular brand of ballet pumps, you should buy a couple of pairs in different colours to add some variety.
  • Like a certain kind of trousers? Make sure you choose the variants that don’t itch. In addition, you should buy them in black colour and linen material.
  • Pick a few tops of your choice, choose a different design with various colours.

There you go! You now have a solid uniform formula that looks great and will take all the decision-making early in the morning.
